Magnet
Magnet is a lightweight macOS window snapper — a menu-bar utility with no window of its own, just a shortcut layer over window placement. Drag a window to a screen edge or corner, or hit a hotkey, and it snaps to a half, third, or quarter of the screen.
How I use it
Section titled “How I use it”- Fast, in-the-moment placement. Snap the front window to a half or quarter right now, nothing more — Moom is what I reach for when I want to recall a whole saved arrangement instead.
- Hotkeys over drag-to-snap. Drag-to-snap is convenient but occasionally fires by accident mid-drag; the keyboard shortcuts are the path I actually trust once the muscle memory is there.
- Multi-monitor, same gesture family. Throwing a window to the next display is the same shortcut plus a modifier key, so I never needed a separate tool just for multi-monitor placement.
Divide labor
Section titled “Divide labor”Magnet and Moom are deliberately two tools, not one: Magnet owns fast, in-the-moment single-window snapping; Moom owns saved, recallable multi-window layouts. Window snapping stays out of general-purpose automation tools entirely — one owner per job avoids hotkey collisions and the ambiguity of not knowing which tool actually moved a window.
