Overcast

Overcast is a podcast player, primarily on iPhone. Two features do most of the work for me: Smart Speed, which shortens silences to reclaim listening time without pitch distortion, and Voice Boost, which normalizes loudness across shows so a quiet interview and a loud ad read don’t force me to keep reaching for the volume.

How I use it

• Listening only — not storage. Anything worth keeping from an episode gets captured elsewhere rather than left to live inside the podcast app; keeping “play this” and “remember this” separate means neither job gets neglected in service of the other.
• One priority playlist, rules-based. Letting the must-listen shows surface automatically removes a small, recurring decision — “what do I play” — that adds up over a lot of listening sessions.
• One app for this one job. Podcasts, focus/background audio, and general media downloading stay on separate tools; a second podcast client creeping in just fragments the queue and the listening history.
